yeah, i know that the Behold isn't a smartphone, but ive done a lot of stuff with terminals on mobile devices such as the itouch (and yes jailbreaking is basically a su) and rooting g1s, and thought if you could get some kind of terminal with su permissions, then you can change wallpapers, and so on......

No, not at the current time.

As of right now, we are only able to write up Java applications for the phone. Java is limited to certain things - one of those things being access of the phone's filesystem.

I think you'll have to elaborate on the term "getting permissions."

well you should know that su is getting permissions like root right, so if we can get a "permission" (aka a superuser) to root access then we can change alot of stuff (besides the admin thing)

i know the behold II uses a completely different OS, but is any of the information in that thread useful for behold I?

i didn't really expect it to be exactly the same, but thought maybe some of the steps or thought-process might be applicable.

the samsung moment is rooted too (but also android/linux), and here's some tips on that: http://www.samsungmomentforum.com/rooting/

Give up on trying to root the Samsung Behold I. It's pointless now, and would just end up being (essentially) a waste of time.

why would it be pointless?  there are still lots of behold users.  as far as i can tell, the focus on improving/customizing the behold thus far has been via tkfe and admin/internal settings.  if he wants to try to dig into the OS level and has the experience from other phones, why are you being so negative?

people said give up.  then, the firmware and un-bricking process was found.  who's to say there won't be more breakthroughs?

You seem to misunderstand; finding a working un-bricking process is far, and by that I mean FAR, from rooting it. Rooting it would take hours upon hours (couple dozen or perhaps more) of trial-and-error work and might not even be possible with the Behold(?). I don't mean to sound negative or offensive, but please understand the topic you are speaking on behalf of before you speak at all. It bothers me when people speak out of ignorance and then smack talk others.

i was saying telenubby is being negative.

to respond to telenubby, i'm not saying it'll be easy or that anybody is even close to rooting the behold.  i'm just saying, give him the info, the background, anything you can to help, and let him make the decision whether it's too much work or not.  shutting him down and saying 'don't waste your time' just impedes potential progress and breakthroughs.
