Is it possible for me to put-in-use my full upgrade eligibility on the Vibrant, paying $200 or so with a new 2-year contract, and NOT be forced to get a data plan?

Is there ANY way around this AT ALL? Could I get the data plan, then cancel it? Can I upgrade via a non-official T-Mobile store (rather, its partners) like Wal-Mart?

If this is possible, in ANY way, please let me know. I'm not planning to pay for the $30 bullshit data plan. Do not post here telling me how the phone is unusable without a data plan and/or it is pointless without one, I know what I'm doing.

Thanks.

I don't know about tmo, but wal mart pretty much said I had to get a data plan with my htc.  I already had unlimited data plan that was grandfathered and they tried to force a different one on me. a call to tmo kept the plan I had. I would try to reason with tmo before wal mart because they seem to have very set plans where tmo can possibly adjust. I don't know about other third party stores though. its worth a try just to see if they can.

I think I was talking to AnthonyC about this (I might be wrong). He said that a nice phone operator might be able to let you have the phone without the data plan as long as you pay for some other plan that costs at least $15 per month. If this is true, it works for me because I have an unlimited texting plan.

What ayrus94 said is true, but I'd also like to add that you might have to get the data plan (use it for that first month, no point in canceling it immediately and still paying the monthly fee), and then change it to a texting plan.

Considering I have already have an unlimited family texting plan... I don't think that's an option.  Undecided

Or you could pretend you gave away your Vibrant (or maybe it broke, this is more reasonable), and say that you don't need the data plan anymore, because you are using an older phone. Be sure to put the SIM into that older phone, because they might check to make sure you're telling the truth. This is what my cousin did, lol.

Same here, but I'll probably just cancel it right before and then get it again as part of the phone's deal.

Isn't the plan part of your contract, and wouldn't you have to pay an ETF to do that?

Lol, what's an ETF? An early termination fee?

No, we added it on ourselves because me and my sister wanted texting. It's completely separated and can be terminated whenever.

It may not work, when I got my new Behold, and they tried to do an update to my old phone, they got an error. After that every time they tried to update the old phone, and got an error they would call me to find what was going wrong and asked had I changed my phone. neither phone had a data plan, it's just that with updates, and problems with phones in general, I think it is bound to come up that you have a Vibrant without a data plan.

But good luck trying, and let us know how well the plan go's.

I called the T-Mobile store nearby today for some answers.

You CAN switch out the contracted Android data plan for another CONTRACTED plan. Unfortunately, the family texting plan is not contracted so I cannot go with this option. Switching from Android web plan to contracted individual texting wouldn't work either because I couldn't cancel the individual plan (because it is contracted) to get the family texting bundle.

NOW, I just realized a possible solution for us who want a Vibrant without having the Android plan forced down our throats.

As you can see (highlighted with the blue underlining), you subscribe to the plan MANUALLY after you upgrade the phone (this is all online, of course). Do you guys think this would work? Receive the phone but don't purchase the Android data plan? I need your inputs.

Yeah, I've heard of people doing that, you see the thing is, I think you need the data plan to start up your phone and login in to your gmail account. (unless of course the Tmobile store does it for you) At least this is what I have experienced with the android Tmobile G1 phone. However, If the Behold 2 doesn't require a data plan to start up, the Vibrant shouldn't either. I recommend you ask BETOQ, cause he has a Behold 2 and if I can recall, he doesn't have a data plan and uses wifi (as well as your proxy).

But I plan to get my phone (it might be a Vibrant) on a 2 year upgrade thru Wal-Mart, mainly because the phones are 5x cheaper. So I also wanna ask: Does Wal-Mart require you to get the data plan when you get a 2 year upgrade through Wal-Mart or do you need to subscribe through My T-Mobile?

I think I'm going to try this out, and doggy at T-Mobile if they automatically put it on my contract. I'm pretty sick of the shoot they force us to do, especially considering their Samsung Android lineup has previously shown to lack support and future upgrades (the Behold 2...).

My Wal-Mart does not yet have the Vibrant, and I was going to ask them for information about the whole process. For now I can't give you any info. on that, sorry.

What are other peoples' inputs on the above method of getting it?
