what is the little thing by the speaker? its gotta be something cuz they made a hole for it on the phone protecter you can buy

It is a light sensor that determines the backlight on the phone (if set to automatic).

It also turns off the keypad when the backlight is off. That way it detects when you place it to your ear it turns off the backlight and touch screen so that you don't have accidental ky presses while talking.
