My phone came with the microSD adapter? What is it used for and does it go into the phone itself?

no, it can be used for any number of things, you put in the micro sd into the adaptor and put it into your computer for easy access, your digital camera, mp3 player, camcorder, w.e it fits.

Basically the adapter gives you the size of a regular SD card which would fit in other devices. As persian mentioned, it could be computers with card readers, or cameras, camcorders, mp3 players, or other devices that support SD cards.
