the only way to get rid of the vertical bars is to convert the video to 320x176 or smaller so you can use zoom. but these smaller resolutions degrade the picture quality when using zoom. For me, I would rather give up a small amount of (vertical) screen for awsome picture quality then have full screen at degraded resolution. Pick your poison.

Sorry to bring up this old thread, but if you are converting your movies to 320x240 as opposed to 320x176, won't the video be severely stretched vertically to the point where it'll look bad?

You can't take a movie that's at an aspect ratio of 1.85 to 1 and convert it to 1.33 to 1 and expect things to look normal on the screen.

On the other hand, if you make it 320x176, the ratio will be a little better, but the video will be smaller on the screen or will look bad if zoomed.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but when I made a movie 320x240, things were obviously stretched vertically to the point where it looked terrible to me.

I don't get why the behold won't play anything with resolution wider than 320 when the screen is 400 wide.  That makes no sense.  If you could encode to 400x???, where Huh allows for the original aspect ratio.  That would be perfect.

Any thoughts?

the only time i noticed a movie looked stretched when i encoded it 320 x 240 was when i tried to encode a wide screen movie. then the people looked way too long. but other then that everything that i have encoded with 320 x 240 looks great

So then what are you encoding exactly?  I want to put movies on the phone.  Pretty much any movie is going to be 1.85 to 1 or wider.

Either it's going to be stretched out or cropped and either way will look bad.

It's just unfortunate that there appears to be no way to encode a movie to 400x240 and have it play.  I don't get why that wasn't allowed.

What are you using and what settings?  I've tried a couple, but I'm using Any Video Converter right now.

Think about it though, let's say I have a DVD movie that's 1.85 to 1 aspect ratio, so that's 720x390.

If I shrink it down to 320x240, you are either going to crop a ton off the left and right sides of the picture, thus losing a lot of image or it's going to push the image inward horizontally, thus making everything look stretched out vertically.

There's just no way around it.  One of those options has to occur.

I guess maybe your encoder is chopping off the sides rather than pushing the image inward.

I'd probably say cropping would be the better of the 2 options, but, for a 1.85 to 1 movie, if you re-encode to 240 vertical pixels, the width should be around 444, so you have to crop out over 25% on the horizontal end to make it fix into 320.  That's pretty significant, especially if the movie is framed for 1.85 to 1.  I guess it depends on how smart your encoder is with the cropping as well.

I guess it's the same thing that occurs when you get a movie made for widescreen and watch it in SD on a 4x3 TV.  You lose a lot of the picture.

I'll try whatever you have at whatever settings you are using and see what I get.  I didn't see any way to crop using Any Video Converter.
