theres no simplier way to do this? like straight from the phone? this seems so difficult

There is a simpler way, go to http://wap.mgmaps.com/ on your phone browser
Download directly the Generic (full) development release v1.41.03
This works with the touch screen and fully functions with GPS position.  It works great!

I tried version you specified and can not get mgmaps app to recognize the internal GPS.  Did you do anything to enable other than specify internal GPS in settings?

Be sure to go outside, have a clear sky above you, and wait about 10 minutes, the GPS should work.

Nothing else other than being outside for good GPS reception.

F.Y.I.   GPS (GLOBAL POSITIONG SYSTEM) works off satellites.  GPS only works in line of site.  Meaning for it to work the reciever has to be able to see the transmitter.  Can't go into the odds and ins of this but to pick up the satellites you have to be outside..  even in military vehicles we have to set up external antennas to pick up satellites for GPS.

I was on the Eastern Costa Rica / Panama border, navigating through the forest by GPS, when suddenly at 5:00 PM the signal was lost. Luckily I was close to that nights destination.  Turns out that the GPS satellites are turned off at night in that area to prevent drug smuggling. Long story short, GPS is great when it works, but can be really hit or miss.

GPS doesn't 'get turned off'.

Signal jammers are around and they can use those to deny you a signal, but GPS is too integral to navigation systems on aircraft, ships, and other uses, that it won't ever be turned off.

I went outside last night for a bit and tried it.  Since it was below freezing + snowing I didn't last 10 minutes  Wink
Tonight I'll throw a warmer jacket on and give it another shot.  Thanks very much for the info!

Another thing I tried last night, paired my behold phone to a Holux 1200 GPS (with gps fix acquired), fired up mobile gmaps app, chose 'bluetooth gps', and chose 'where am I' from the gps menu.  I got same error message I get when using internal phone gps.  I would have expected this to work since bluetooth gps uses standard NMEA data protocol.  Sad
anyone else tried this successfully?

I have a external gps receiver but haven't had the need to try it out. I'll have to see how they play together.

[I'm the guy who couldn't get mgmap to successfully use his Samsung Behold's internal gps...]
update:  on the bus ride home tonight I decided to try out the 14 day trial of Telnav gps app.  after entering my name and connecting, the app acquired a gps fix fairly quickly and showed my location.  I was relieved that my phone's gps was at least functional.  so I got dropped off at my stop and decided to start up mgmap, just for grins.  I thought, wouldn't it be cool if Telnav somehow enabled something  Roll Eyes.  What do you know, mgmap fired up and was able to show me my location before I reached my house (half block walk).
My experience is probably a total coincidence, but mgmap worked great once I had fired up Telnav at least once.  Also, the 14 day trial is opt in, which means if you don't do anything, the service just expires.  no mess, nothing to cancel.
